An uplifting tune that I’m sure is going to bring relief to not just a lot of kids; but also adults through the sentiments of Smashproof’s new single Survivors which tackles issues of bullying, youth suicide and abuse, head on. It’s a beautifully crafted piece of kiwi Hip Hop with a delicious hook sung sweetly by RnB artist Pieter T, sandwiched between thoughtful and thought-provoking MC turns on the mic from each of the Smashproof boys. Like their runaway hit with Gin Wigmore, Brother; Survivors features a breath-takingly crafted music video shot again by Chris Graham, which features in stark black and white, real kiwi kids portraying the narrative of the song’s two heroes: Jeremiah and Talia.
These real kiwi kids are actually students from Rosehill Intermediate School; where Smashproof member Tyree is a teacher’s aide – this gesture no only holds up a mirror to NZ’s youth and shows them a little bit of their own backyard in a music video for once (a backyard that is sadly, far too effected by bullying and abuse than perhaps we’d like to advertise as a nation.); but it also shows a tender dedication on the part of this group to really effect sorely needed change in our society.
Fans of the song and its message are encouraged at the close of the video to share their experiences via the hashtag #ImASurvivor in regards to the issues that the song raises; plus experiences can also be submitted on Tumblr on Live for Tomorrow. Thank goodness then that Smashproof have created a beautiful, meaningful and hopeful song; one that will have the ability to be played just about anywhere and therefore reach as many of the people that need it as possible, with the message: ‘I’m ok, I’m ok/You won’t get me today, today!’
