Single/Video Review: Mama Got It Bad
Anthea de Milo
Lyttelton based soulful songwriter Anthea de Milo (Anthea Struthers of Saint Satori, Runabout Sue & The Harbour Union) has just released her outlandish (in the best possible way) debut single accompanied by an eccentric music video full of originality and colour. A combination of song and visuals that invade your senses with delightful quirkiness.
Growing up the vicar’s daughter, Anthea spent many hours every Sunday singing in the church, it was her escape into another world “the vicar’s daughter, clown/goddess, mama, saint/sinner/singer and soulful songwriter”.
Given her background in music it is no surprise she has an impressive vocal range touched with a gospel flair.
From the onset Mama Got It Bad draws you in with the fresh eclectic sound. Even if you sit there listening with your eyes shut you would know that the video is going to be oozing with originality and enchantment. Directed by Jason Larraman it is vibrant and engaging, much like the song it’s accompanying.
Mama Got It Bad is a team effort featuring Anthea de Milo on vocals, Adam Hattaway on guitars, Elmore Jones on drums, Michael Kime on bass, Thomas Isbister and Greg Knowles on trumpets.
This is a track which is fresh and interesting delivering a decent amount of soul infused blues along with a hefty dose of sass.
Keep an eye out for Anthea’s album The Vicars Daughter which is released early December. If it is anything like the debut single, we are in for a real treat.
