Single/Video Review: Baby It’s Fine

Lisa Crawley’s latest single Baby It’s Fine is a delightfully unhurried and soulful pop track. Starting with a slow strum of the guitar and an almost acoustic vibe to the bass, there is a slow melancholic edge to the song.

Lyrically, the verses are well written with great flow and a straightforward narrative. An engaging story that is natural enough that it almost feels like you are in the middle of a one-sided conversation. Varying syllabic patterns keep away any traces of monotony, and the lyric “F*ck I am in deep” stands out poignantly, due to the sharpness with which it is said, contrasting the smooth flow in the rest of the vocal melody.

Combining a much more classic style of pop music with modern vernacular, Lisa Crawley has such a pleasant grain of voice, especially during the higher notes of the chorus. Midway through the track, there is a simple clarinet solo that boosts the instrumental power of the track without effecting the leisurely pace.

The music video (shot by New York based, kiwi director and photographer Emily Hlavac Green) mirrors the context of the song, which follows an awkward dance-floor romance. Focused on the two characters, we follow their experience; the dusky room, dancing lights and reflections, time slowing down around the person you have affections for, and a lot of staring into each other’s eyes. A simple video that requires no deep insight to follow, which works well to not take the emphasis away from the vocal element.

While at face value, there really doesn’t seem to be much to the track, yet there is something ultimately endearing about it that draws you in. Something comfortable; something sentimental and wistful.
