Single Review: You Got Me Good

Lola Sola has been a busy girl. Consistently releasing an album or EP every two years, a feat that is much harder than it may sound, she does not disappoint with her new track You Got Me Good. Muzic.net.nz’s Ria, had the pleasure of reviewing her album Walking Back From Hell in 2016, and I must say, I wish I were reviewing an album and not just a single song.

True to her reputation, You Got Me Good has a simple guitar riff, topped with powerful vocals. I am somewhat pleased Lola Sola decided to completely strip this song back to solely guitar and vocals, no fluff or extra stuff. It’s all that it needs. There is beauty in simplicity; honesty in its rawness, and it is gorgeously captured. The song is a credit to Nut N Butter Studio where it was recorded. They (and she) have managed to achieve the elusive ‘live’ feel in a studio. The guitar tone is absolutely silky and balanced nicely against Loa Sola’s voice. There is a big room reverb put on the voice, and it does exactly that. You are given the sensation you are in a big hall, with spectacular acoustics, it’s dark, there’s one spotlight on the stage and you get to listen in silence. Further, whatever compression that has been used on the track is perfect. It achieves a bulky feel without overpowering the senses. The song is capable of filling the room without being loud. It even passes the laptop speakers test!

Lyrically you are lead around in circles. A treat for the mind when lyrics are repeated, changing only the pronoun. It has the effect of making you feel you know the words and draws you deeper into the story. Relatable, and audible (diction matters!), and a delight to the ears.
