Single Review: Wait For It 1

I couldn’t have put it better. In the video that accompanies the release of Wait For It from Darren McShane’s newly invigorated Superturtle, there’s a comment posted by ArapuniWizard: “Another good song from the Birkenhead hit factory!” That’s a reference to Earwig Studios, where Superturtle have been hatching post-punk meaty beats since 2008.

OK, it’s not exactly takeaway music because, if it suits your palette, you want to dine out on it properly and savour the piquancy. Wait For It rollicks along at a pace that makes you initially think you might be jumping into a bit of Madness and mayhem. A swirl of fuzzy guitar alters the pace, the lyrics kick in “where you’re heading in your life, never going to get it right. You’ve got to wait for it”, a solid rhythm carries the momentum through the chorus and then there’s a glorious freefall into an almost psychedelic space with squalling guitar and a Joy Division style bass line, which is a bit like listening to a friend egg starting to sizzle and then gently simmer.

If this is a precursor to another album, then I can’t wait for it.
