Single Review: Runaway

This is the second release from Shivers since the group evolved in Wellington in 2018. Founders Adrian Win and Timmy Porter are at the heart of the sound, but Runaway involves a larger cast of contributors-notably drummer Rick Cranson.

Runaway employs a very contemporary, ‘modern soul’ sound. Listeners of 2021’s most popular live bands will find the sound and vibe relatable and recognisable. As such, Runaway is tightly arranged, and meticulous in terms of the playing and delivery. The key element of rhythmic unity- groove- is clearly understood and carefully preserved making this a fundamental part of the song’s appeal.

When written down, the lyrical content might seem somewhat incongruous given the up tempo vibe, but the way the melody is shaped means- conversely perhaps-that the end result is an affirming and uplifting mood- which largely eliminates any potential disparity between the message and the delivery. This is a hallmark of strong melodic writing.

It would be surprising indeed if this song is not chart-bound, given its obvious appeal and the success of previous single Right of Way. The next steps from this ensemble should be interesting indeed.
