Single Review: Rug Of Numbers 1

Following the release of her debut single Betsy, Indie Pop Singer-Songwriter Laura-mae has returned with her second single Rug of Numbers.

The Golden Bay native has competed in the famous Smokefree Rockquest and made it to the boot camp round of The New Zealand X Factor during its second season. After taking a break from music to study, Laura-mae is now emerging into the New Zealand music scene with a fresh, easy listening singer-songwriter sound.

Rug of Numbers is a slow burning track, which touches on the subject of being “just another number” to a person. Laura-mae’s smooth, velvety vocals are layered over a simple chord progression. The track starts off with sparse instrumentation which gradually builds over the course of the song’s 3 and a half minute duration, reaching its climax in the final chorus with Laura-mae’s soaring vocals etching the melody into listener’s heads.

Laura-mae is a clever lyric writer, drawing inspiration from Stevie Nicks and John Lennon. Her words paint a vivid picture. The stand out line in this single is the main hook – “Take my heart and fix it or break my heart and sweep it under your rug of numbers.”

Laura-mae has been working hard behind the scenes and it’s paying off. Expect to hear one more single from this new artist before the year is out.
