Single Review: Minute 1

Minute is the third in a series of singles released by up and coming Aucklander, Chris Bates, and produced by long-time collaborator EDY. Both have been making waves in the local scene, with sell out shows and highly streamed tracks.

Minute begins with light, summery synth chords that slow then drop away as Chris’s vocal comes in, soon joined by bass and beats. His smooth voice soars above the subtle synths and groovy bass line. Despite being predominantly synths and samples, the clear vocal delivery and restrained production presents an authentic sound.

The chorus boasts a catchy play on words, ‘If you’re here for a minute, I’m in it’. Chris sings about living in the moment, carefree for the future. “The chorus explores meeting a potential love interest in an unexpected place…Although the person will likely disappear by the morning, the song is about disregarding that and going somewhere”, Chris explains.

The extended outro, by pop standards, creates space in the track as the vocals echo and synths fade, you’re left wondering what’s next to come from this talented, young pop artist.
