Single Review: Lonely 1

Alternative Singer-Songwriter Jaz Paterson released her debut single Lonely on the 13th of August.

Produced by Will McGillivray (nomad, There’s A Tuesday, Bexy) and mastered by Kamandi, Lonely is the first of three singles to be released from Jaz’s anticipated debut EP Ache, set to be released in November.

Originally from Geraldine, the now Christchurch based songwriter has been influenced by artists including Banks, Tove Lo, James Blake and Bon Iver.

Lonely tells the story of the loneliness of being a musician. “It’s about driving to a gig where I don’t know anyone, showing up, dressing up, singing to strangers, packing down, heading home by myself while my friends are out. I’m thankful but simultaneously feeling lonely and not wanting to admit that to myself.” Jaz says.

The track begins with a hollow, moody synth line, followed by Jaz’s breathy, husky vocals. The pre-chorus builds up to a catchy chorus which is sure to get listeners humming along within the first few listens. Jaz’s vocals are perfectly complimented by eerie synths and exciting, industrial like production. Her honest, raw lyrics paint a vivid picture for listeners.

A haunting, relatable tune that’s perfect for these isolating times in lock down, Lonely is an exciting introduction to this talented up and coming artist.
