Single Review: Hail

Jarrod Ross, formerly of Pan Am and Valedictions, brings us Hail, a solo effort of the rock variety, born of lockdown conditions. Reminiscent of some of the dreamier aspects of American and British rock of the recent and distant past, Ross’ solo project was a long time plan, enabled by the pandemic.

Hail starts with classic rock guitar chugs, before the band comes in with soaring leads over jammed out drums. The sound is like a mix between classic and desert rock. The track is nicely balanced, with the vocals shining through prominently. Ross brings a Jane’s Addiction energy with the vocals, channeling Perry Farrell. The lyrics espouse a sense of hopelessness with the phrase “It’s a stone cold future, looking like you’re gonna be there, I think I lost my future”.

The lush soundscape is rounded out by a washed-out guitar solo to close the song. The solo is reminiscent of Pete Townshend, a feeling that is reinforced by the huge rhythm guitar stabs in behind. The track’s trippy vibe, blended with cryptic lyrics, allow the listener’s mind to wander across planes of thought.
