Last Summer Ep Review 1

Cavell is a surprising new talent to emerge in the NZ music scene. He has gradually developed his own musical sense of style through collaborations and guidance from local super-talented artists such as DLove and Deach, Jae’O and from record-breaking Hip Hop group Smashproof whom he was a support act. But it was only a matter of time before Cavell stepped out on this own to bringing us his first EP ‘Last Summer.’

The first single to drop was ‘I Need You,’ the music video and song are very Kanye meets Frank Ocean. There is a real resonance with Frank Ocean over the whole E.P starting with the lead piano driven track ‘Sunrise.’ The second track, ‘The Crowd’ features Young Sid AKA Sidney Diamond who brings a complimentary flow. It has a NZ R&B feel which creates a very natural point of difference when making comparisons with other artists.

The next two tracks ‘Red,’ and ‘I Still Love You’ build the tempo of the EP with a little more drums and summer vibe only to end on the title track ‘Last Summer,’ a beautiful ballad. Including a ballad seems to be a theme in NZ R&B and Hip Hop at the moment, especially for artists who want to showcase their vocal abilities and mix up their style. I think that ‘Last Summer’ and ‘I Still Love You’ are hidden gems on the EP and if you are in love with Frank Ocean right now then you will not be able to help falling for Cavell.
