This Flight Tonight have coined their own genre as “dynamic rock”. As the album progressed I was more and more convinced, started hearing subtle elements of their self proclaimed influences in the vocals and drums (Radiohead, Jeff Buckley). The band is fronted by Ralph Warren Engle; he says music is a form of therapy for him and gathers whoever is around at the time to join him in his musical endeavors.
Their debut album “Friendly Fire” is a collection of catchy rock songs, they’ve got somewhere between a medium and big sound with some really great vocal lines. “Always be mine” has an underlying tom drum rhythm carrying the song through with some soaring, hooky vocal lines from Engle. Though it didn’t really build to anything spectacular it was nice to listen to. “Good to me” starts off as a slow bluesy jam, it’s got a really catchy chorus again with some great vocals! Those lines were in my head for a while.
I was more and more impressed with This Flight Tonight as I listened to the album, Engle is a talented song writer and the songs are well arranged. This is an undeniably good band, I can see them doing well in the mainstream. They’re great in terms of pop-rock and more enjoyable to my ears than some of what’s on the charts at the moment. I get the feeling they’ve got some epic works ahead of them. Looking forward to seeing what they release next, seems like these guys are overdue some publicity/mainstream media coverage.
