Whilst citing influences so broad and diverse as to be “way too many” to list, and those influences are drawn from “anywhere and everywhere”, The Early 20’s will have you believe that at the end of the day, they’re a punk band. Defining one’s band’s genre can often be difficult, especially in cases like this where a multitude of influences are at play. However, listening to their new EP Vultures, I felt that the description of Punk sold short what is truly on offer here.
Upon my first listen to the title-track opener, I was immediately struck by the depth and maturity of the sound, quite unexpected from the definition of “Alternative Punk”… and, to be honest, the name The Early 20’s. A mid-paced post-punk banger, tasty guitar tones, solid interlocking rhythm section, and strong, melodic vocals set the tone for the feel of the EP. Little Fish has a delicious guitar line that’s as catchy as you like, I found it rattling around the ol’ brainpan long after listening.
Monday Drive gets about as far from the definition of punk as one can get, with its airy, cruisy feel amply befitting its name. Another beautifully constructed song, and quite perfect for being the soundtrack to the song’s subject matter. Good Intent has a lush and sweet sound, with yet more of the superb interplay between the three band members on display. This is a band who clearly communicate well with each other and play purely for the song itself. There’s not the slightest bit of any showboating on this EP, just fine craftsmen at work.
Last track Rain has the best chorus of the whole EP, I reckon. Simple, and yet so effective. I love the vocal harmonies in this song.
Vultures is for anyone who appreciates well-crafted songs, with great production to boot. Long may they continue.

I spend most of my days tutoring music, which equates to getting to talk about music and play guitar, and then people give me money. It’s an absolute blast. I really like good coffee, a lot. I’m rarely satisfied with my guitar pedalboard. I have a cat called Liberty.
