EP Review: Silhouette

Wellington based singer songwriter Alba Rose has released her lush four track EP, Silhouette. A beautifully rich collection of soulful jazz, contemporary in its delivery incorporating an indie-pop and neo-soul sound wrapped around playful harmonious lyrics.

Alba Rose (formerly lead singer for indie-pop band Corduroy.), has played to sold-out shows and supported International acts, so knows a thing or two about the New Zealand music scene. Now out on her own supported by the smooth jazz sounds of her full band comprising of Rory Johns (keys), Elijah Mulheron (double bass), Rafe Swan (drums) and Tyaan Singh (sax), Alba Rose has created a well-rounded velvety EP full of gutsy delectable vocals and warm luscious instrumentation.

It was easy to become captivated by Silhouette, each track had a mesmerising quality. Eve, Butterfly Kisses, Holding On and Serendipity each wonderfully melodic and beautifully composed. Accompanying creative album cover artistry by Lily Sea Kelp abstractly shows the theme “that with the light there is always dark.”

Each of the tracks are equally smooth, however the standout for me was Serendipity, the relaxed soft vibe of balmy summer nights flow through the track, which creates a stunning finale to Silhouette.

Four tracks of warm velvety harmonious vocals backed with the full band sound has created a cohesive and moreish soundscape which leaves me hopeful for a full album sometime soon.
