EP Review: Rogue Planet

Solo Ono are a Wellington two piece (and the occasional three-piece) indulging in some no-frills garage post pop with synth overtones, creating their own sound.

Having been six years since their self-titled 2012 debut, Solo Ono have finally broken the drought with a new EP release- Rogue Planet.

The four track EP is a bit of whirlwind in length, as with most EP’s, but captures the essence of Solo Ono in a nutshell. Opening track, Rogue Planet has a crunchy intro and signature synth, made possible with a Synthstrom Deluge, an all in one, stand alone, portable synthesizer. The result makes for a consistent beat, with the added touch of Solo Ono’s own style. Vocalist, Frank Eggleton has a simple and plain vocal style that compliments their sound well.

Considering Solo Ono are merely a two-piece most of the time, you can tell they like to have fun with their style, and you can hear that throughout this EP. Each track is without complication and is breezy without being overdone. The production is crisp and really shows the tight musicianship between Frank and (Drummer) Jordan.

Solo Ono’s Rogue Planet is a quick, refreshing sound in a world of exploration.
