Channeled, the facet of musical expression for Auckland’s Ben Ruegg are returning to the fold with Part One of Channeled II, a 3 part album that is being released over the next 6 months. Originally this was purely a solo project, and Channeled now has a live element as well as a debut album under their belt. Channeled II is the beginning of the next chapter for Ruegg and the band.
Open Up is the lead single, and begins with a huge Filter-inspired rhythm section set up. The song gives way to creepy lyrics about misleading vulnerable people, which is brought home by the accompanying music video which has charming, DIY vibes. The bass tone is nothing short of delicious, and the mix overall is dazzlingly clear. The chorus opens up (heh) with soaring guitar lines, a haunting undercurrent and a Sevendust feel to the arrangement. Fans of early 2000’s rock won’t want to sleep on this track.
Your Way brought to mind the Korn sound of recent times. Another great rhythm section set up – I’m not sure if it’s really the band playing or just Ben, but if it was the band, they’d be strutting. If it was Ben, he might be strutting by himself, which is a perfectly valid thing to do. My point is, it’s sounding great. The bridge rhythm plays with a triplet feel before landing back in a straighter pocket. There is a lot to like about this track, and the hugely accessible chorus and screaming solo are the cherries on top.
Once again, cool rhythms are the bedrock of No More. The gritty guitar tones, thick bass, atmospheric leads and Filter influences continue, this time with a bluesy feel. Another great song to round out Part 1 of this three part album. If you’re a fan of NZ rock music, get across Channeled and this record because there is a lot to like here, and they’re just getting started.
