Young Moon announce double EP release ‘Paraverbal Orchids’/’Young Moon Is a Broken Bone’

Trevor Montgomery has been writing and recording brooding ballads and blissful psychedelia as Young Moon for over a decade. Utilizing vintage drum machines and atmospheric synths, Montgomery has a talent for lo-fi tracks with genuine lyrics exploring love, life, and death.
Paraverbal Orchids/Young Moon is a Broken Bone is set for release via Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington label Home Alone on 28th February. This will be Young Moon’s first release since Triggered by Sunsets, the sublime full-length album released on Orindal Records USA (Casiotone for the Painfully Alone/Cass McCombs/Julie Byrne) in 2023.
At the end of 2019, following the suicide of a treasured friend, Montgomery packed up his life in San Francisco and shifted halfway around the globe to Nelson, New Zealand. He arrived in his new home just as the global pandemic took hold. Without a close community to moor himself to, Montgomery dove into work; he began renting an empty masonic temple, built a recording studio inside, and tore into a fresh batch of songs. These sessions would produce the songs released on Triggered by Sunsets. With a large collection of tracks not making the album, these are now set to be released as Paraverbal Orchids/Young Moon is a Broken Bone.
The first single The Orbiting Object is out now.

The Orbiting Object: A love for sci-fi and a nod to the 30 grams of Nanjing orchid seeds that were carried into space for breeding tests. The heart of this song is a simple, romantic love story… “Talking on the phone, tenderness language being passed back and forth, from which a relationship grows”.
Origins of the Double EP Paraverbal Orchids/Young Moon is a Broken Bone:
Paraverbal Orchids was first released independently in 2022 and is now re-released as part of double-EP via Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington label Home Alone The EP takes its name from American fantasy novelist-Ursula K. Le Guin’s concept of Paraverbal communication. Montgomery says:
“I was surprised to discover this concept, I felt like I had been existing in that space my whole life…trying to communicate on this other conscious level” Paired with the word Orchid, a gorgeous flower that exists in the most impossible places, Paraverbal Orchids describes what my life was like when I moved to the Islands of Aotearoa. Trying to figure out what the hell I was doing, with all this music [that would become the EP] and then there it was, the Orchid appeared and showed me the way.”
Young Moon is a Broken Bone is a collection of songs written and recorded during sessions for the Young Moon’s third LP Triggered by Sunsets. Montgomery says:
“The tracks on Broken Bone speak of always feeling like I was not quite operating at the same speed as other people, not quite up to date on all the info…..I felt like I was always missing something my whole life, always behind. Feeling as if I was always under a dark cloud, a broken bone at best. Until I realised that I wasn’t, that I was under this beautiful blue sky and these beautiful cloud shape-forms. And then all the trees around me shimmering and shaking, and that really changed everything.”
The album is available to pre-order digitally on Bandcamp, and will be available on all streaming services.
