Cloudhead is the latest body of work by Melbourne-based, Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland, New Zealand) multi-instrumentalist and songwriter/producer, Reuben Hudson. Reuben is a genre-bending artist, his intricate use of wordplay throughout the 5 track EP echoes the writing styles of hip-hop. He combines this with a few key influences including Courtney Barnett, MGMT and the modern production elements of Alex G. The resulting EP is a synth-laced alternative/indie rock sound with punk themes and pop sensibilities.

The Cloudhead EP covers an array of themes, such as feeling (and celebrating) that you don’t belong in the society around you, juxtaposed with surrendering your identity in order to fit in.

“In my case, I didn’t relate to New Zealand’s macho, Fonterra drinking, ‘harden up’ Rugby culturethat takes its toll on our mental health. However as I wrote much of this music from the isolatedposition of awaiting a kidney transplant, I managed to keep a sense of what it was that made medifferent.”

“Black cup, white silk, no backbone, drink your milk.” Cloudhead

Featuring David Harris on drums (Princess Chelsea), mixed by Peter Ruddell (Wax Chattels, Sulfate) and mastered by James Goldsmith (Mermaidens), Cloudhead was written, produced and performed by Reuben Hudson.
