Repulsive Woman Shares New Single 'rough Around The Edges'

Repulsive Woman (the solo project of Millie Lovelock) has shared a new track Rough Around The Edges from Lovelock’s forthcoming album Relief, due out on June 24, 2019. Rough Around The Edges is out today on all streaming services. To celebrate the single release, the Dunedin-based artist is set to play three shows around Aotearoa in May. Lovelock’s understated vocals move lightly atop a bed of hypnotic acoustic guitar, leaning into bittersweet melodies that interlock with a mimicking violin part. The result is unassuming yet potent melancholy, effortlessly and delicately administered.

“I wanted Rough Around The Edges to capture the anxiety of always looking like the bad guy, of always being too prickly, too abrupt, too prepared to stick up for yourself,” Lovelock explains. “For me it’s an anxiety that runs parallel to the fear of being too exposed, so soft and vulnerable that I am lost in between.”

Like circulating rumours, Lovelock’s vocals are panned back and forth, left to right, surrounding the listener. “It’s all reported speech, I’m hardly there. It’s a lonely song, but I think it’s very warm at the core”.

As one half of the much-loved alt-indie two-piece Astro Children, Lovelock is no stranger to the New Zealand music scene. She first began uploading covers to Bandcamp under the Repulsive Woman moniker in late 2015, and is now poised to put forth a debut album of original material through the solo project.

The debut album Relief is set for release in June, and will feature 8 new tracks recorded throughout 2018 with engineer Adelaide Dunn in Dunedin, prior to Lovelock’s time at Red Bull Music Academy, Berlin.
