Rachel Leo returns with an early summer breakup anthem, ‘Good God!’

Deemed by many as New Zealand’s next pop export, Rachel Leo is back with her fourth single, Good God!, written with and produced by Joel Jones (Will Swinton, Balu Brigada, alayna). In the same vein as Sabrina Carpenter, Clairo and Dayglow, this track is a nonchalant, unbothered goodbye to a situation that was no longer serving her. The easy and fun feel of this single marks the start of a new sound for Rachel Leo -“whether it’s a relationship, friendship, family situation, workplace or even an era of your life, this track is about moving on to better and bigger things knowing your absence will be felt deeply when you’re gone”.
With placements on 14+ curated Apple, Spotify and YouTube playlists, airplay on BBC Radio 1, ZM and The Edge, consistent appearances on the Hot NZ Singles charts, features in major media outlets (NZ Woman’s Day, TVNZ Breakfast, Newshub, MTV, and The Project), and a following of 17,000 across socials, this 3-time recipient of NZ On Air funding has firm support from the industry and country.
Alongside collaborating with Australasian pop legends including Liam Quinn (Peach PRC, Rita Ora), Alex Wildwood (The Veronicas, Broods), Joseph Corban-Banks (Foley, LA Women) and Drax Project for her own project, Leo enjoys writing for other artists and genres, most notably for Lee Mvtthews on their track Dice which has over 1,100,000 streams.
Written in producer, Joel Jones’ Takapuna studio, the song concept stemmed from Leo’s remark Good God! about a situation she was in where she felt overlooked, undervalued and invisible. Knowing it was time to end that relationship in her life, the lyrics follow her processing the fact that she’s never going to be the perfect amount of anything for this person. The production captures the feelings of relief and freedom when she became unanchored from the situation – “I wanted the song to feel like you’re driving away from the city on a warm summer night, arms draped out of the window, and the further away you get, the lighter you feel.” Following the success of her last single In My Dreams which secured editorial Spotify playlisting, radio play on The Edge, ZM, Sun FM and Q97, placement on TikTok’s in-app ‘Pop’ playlist and coverage on TVNZ and Juice TV, her fresh new track Good God! is set to be the perfect early-summer anthem.
