Phil Stoodley Releases 'vampires'

After residing in Bali, Indonesia for the past eight years, Phil Stoodley has returned to his homeland, New Zealand, and is set to unveil new music on home turf for the first time in over a decade.

His latest single, Vampires, kicks off with a simple yet melodic riff & bombastic drum beat that digs into your ears like dirt under your nails. Despite its lyrical simplicity, the song is profoundly compelling, exploring the concept that we are all vampires who have lost our way, yet it offers a glimmer of hope. Stoodley’s songwriting style pays homage to legendary poetic songwriters such as Johnny Cash and Jim Morrison, infusing a sense of familiarity into the narrative. This supernatural theme permeates his upcoming rock EP, slated for a full release by mid-2024.

Stoodley expressed his excitement about his creative journey, stating, “I’m thrilled to be venturing into uncharted musical territory. Revisiting my rock roots with the old electric guitar and delving into darker supernatural themes lyrically truly excites me.”

The single was produced and recorded at Jos Lab Studio in Sanur, Bali, in collaboration with the renowned local rock musician, Ian Stevenson (Wayan Jos), along with talented Indonesian session musicians.

In a distinctive partnership, the music video for Vampires was brought to life under the direction of Miles Murphy, the talented son of renowned New Zealand director Geoff Murphy. Stoodley captured the band’s performance segments in Bali and dispatched the footage to Murphy in Australia. There, he skillfully edited the material, weaving together a visually stunning narrative using captivating footage he had shot in Australia.

Vampires single and its accompanying music video are set to be released on all major platforms on November 17th, 2023.
