New Release From Riiki Reid And Muroki 'kārewa' Out Today On Warner Music New Zealand

Teaming up to record their first original composition in te reo Māori, Muroki and Riiki Reid (Ngāti Porou) release Kārewa today – a heartfelt waiata for those going through a tough time. Meaning to be floating/buoyant Kārewa is a connotation to helping the people around you to stay afloat when they feel like they are sinking in the ocean, which we call life.

“Muroki and I came up with this concept to do with having a loved one who was going through the notions of doubt and needed a lifeline to hold onto”, says Riiki Reid on the heartfelt new single.

“When things aren’t going your way in life, it can be so hard to see any good, but with the love and support of the people around you, we can help each other out of the dark times and show each other that it is easier to breathe above the water, not under it. It’s a song about support and hope that we will be okay.”

On September 4th, a short documentary will release unveiling the creative process behind Kārewa. Written during a Waiata Anthems songwriting wānanga with mātanga reo (language consultant) Pānia Papa, and industry veterans Dallas Tamaira, and Devin Abrams, the resulting waiata is as poignant as it is authentic. From behind the scenes at the filming of their live performance music video, Riiki and Muroki share the excitement, challenges, and nerves that accompany the creation of something truly original.
