Marianne Leigh Unveils Her Emotive Ep 'simple Things', With New Single 'without Me'

18-year-old Auckland artist Marianne Leigh has today released her breathtaking EP Simple Things, along with new single Without Me.

Written entirely from Marianne’s personal experience, Simple Things encapsulates the raw, beautiful and often extreme emotions of teenagehood. Each track untangles the complicated rollercoaster that is adolescence, with the body of work tied together by the overarching theme of love in all its forms.

“Writing this collection of songs helped me uncomplicate my problems, inspiring the title of the EP. Each song discusses different types of love; whether it is for yourself, a friend, or for a relationship. And love, at its core, is a simple thing.”

Also released today is new single Without Me, a deeply personal track about a friendship break-up. Produced by Emily Wheatcroft-Snape, the recording features audio from Marianne’s childhood, with both the voices of Marianne and her now ex-childhood friend adding a heart wrenchingly personal touch to the track.

“Every time I play the song, the recording at the end brings back so many memories. This was a person that I had grown up with, loved, and had been very close with for years, so the recording is a bittersweet reminder of the story behind the song.”

Writing the EP between the ages of 16 and 18, the indie-pop artist found comfort in the expression of music, turning to lyric and melody to communicate complex feelings into something simple.

“I find myself writing music through the painful and joyful times in my life. When I’m not able to speak my mind, or I feel I’m not being heard, I know I can always write and create.”

The EP contains the already released hood-laden single Sweet Goodbyes, as well as the emotive piano ballad Suddenly.
