Mana Maoli is coming to NZ!
In Hawaiian, “Mana” is life force and “Maoli” means genuine, original, or native. Mana Maoli Collective refers to hundreds of youth, underground and professional artists in Hawaii who come together under Mana Maoli’s non-profit, in support of the keiki (youth), the ʻaina (environment), and pono (justice).
From March 3rd through to March 19th, Aotearoa is blessed with their presence when they perform at various festivals and workshops in the NZ schools and communities, offering workshops on hula, ukulele, slack-key guitar, sovereign Hawaiian education (charter schools), and Makahiki games. In addition to sharing their music and culture at the Nga Puhi, Pasifika, and WOMAD festivals, Mana Maoli Collective will also be lining up with local favorites like 1814, Katchafire, Che Fu, and Tigilau Ness.
This dynamic all-star band features 6 accomplished vocalists of diverse styles – Grammy winner and living legend John Cruz, Kiliona Young, (a reggae/hip hop favorite of the Big Island Underground) and 4 Na Hoku Hanohano Award winners – Anuhea (currently Hawaiiʻs hottest female vocalist of her genre), along with 3 vocalists and players from Hawaiiʻs most popular reggae band, Natural Vibrations.
These vocalists are backed by a mind blowing rhythm section that includes world-class percussionist Lopaka Colon and Kapena Delima, one of Hawaiiʻs most highly coveted drummers. Sharing both original and traditional Hawaiian music, they will be joined by Kumu Hula Mehanaokala Hind, Kekoa Kane – a young prodigy in the art of Hawaiian falsetto, standup bass player Nakana Wong, and highly skilled traditional hula practitioners.
Created from a harmonious synergy of voices and styles, this innovative group embraces a fresh approach to inspiring change while honouring and perpetuating their music and culture. Deeply committed to protecting the land and people of Hawaii, the Mana Maoli Collective typically focuses its awareness and fundraising efforts on Native Hawaiian public charter schools. These schools demonstrate amazing success with their youth despite severe funding and facilities inequity, as they strive to perpetuate ancestral knowledge with the best of 21st century approaches to learning.
