Jaz Paterson Unveils Video For Tender Single ‘Ache’

“…the track plays out like a tango of duelling emotions…and the play between a fragile sensitivity and fiery strength is truly compelling.” – The May Magazine
Rising alt-indie-pop artist Jaz Paterson today releases the video for the title track off her debut EP Ache. Initially released at the end of last year, Ache was preceded by intimate first single Lonely, followed up by escapist ballad LA, and finally, the EP itself.
The Ōtautahi-based talent is making waves and gathering momentum with every release of her unapologetically emotive songs. Acclaimed for her raw and honest, confessional style of music, Jaz showcases song-writing skills that deliver tunes which pack an emotional punch to make the most heartless amongst us fold.
A tender splitting-up song, created with upcoming production wizz Will McGillivray, Ache details how Jaz nearly married her ex-boyfriend, and the bittersweet relief that comes when it ends – which still leaves you with an ache, a bruise, from the toll of the split.
“Ache is a break-up song. But before it became a break-up song, it was a relationship that had a lot of beautiful parts,” says Jaz.
The video was a creative group effort, shot and directed by videographer Liam Simpson, and with the inspired input of stylist Kate Stacey and photographer Sam Walls. It encapsulates the journey of Jaz’s relationship over one summer, from the joy of sharing everything with someone special, only for it to end, and onto the acceptance and happiness to be solo once more.
“I wanted to capture a summer of me and my ex-partner on film – picking berries, dinner with our friends, watching the sun set, having picnics together. The video is the pieces of our life that we had together, and I wanted it to represent my transition from the comfort of that relationship to the confidence of being on my own without him.”
The catchy single begins with a bittersweet melancholy piano riff, leading through to an intensely crafted driving synth beat, an intimate emotionally held together vocal with sobering lyrics which get you right in the gut. Her refreshing take on original music instantly captivates and intrigues.
Already blazing her own path within the New Zealand music industry, keep your finger on the pulse and watch as Jaz’s career continues to heat up. The future looks bright for this young, gifted talent.
“Blending shimmering synths, modern percussion and warm live instrumentation, the soundscape across ‘Ache’ is bold and dazzling…an exemplary debut release from Jaz Paterson.” – Sniffers
