Jay Clarkson and The Containers Announce ‘Falling Through’ Album

Jay Clarkson, an integral part of Flying Nun during the 80’s and 90’s, has continued on her idiosyncratic musical path of combining edgy alternative rock with folky finger-picked guitar and truly poetical lyrics for over 30 years. In the about to be released album Falling Through, one of her finest yet, her skills and sensitivity are expressed once more, a decade after her critically acclaimed Spur album. The release, on beautiful vinyl, is set for March 21 through all discerning record shops.
Says Jay, “It’s been a long time coming and it’s very satisfying to hear it sounding so rich and full. And beautiful.” In the four decades of her career, the prolific singer-songwriter has performed and recorded as a solo artist but also collaborated with numerous musicians in bands They Were Expendable, The Expendables, Breathing Cage, The Matches, and currently The Spur Line. The story of The Containers began in 2017 when Jay teamed up with Mike Dooley (The Enemy, Toy Love, Snapper, The Snares) on drums, Alan Haig (The Chills, Snapper, David Kilgour & The Heavy 8s) on keyboards, and David Glynn on bass. A few months later, the new band played a magnificent set at the first Zelle Fest at The Crown, Dunedin.
In the ensuing years, concerts were played nationwide (NZ), songs written and recorded, two singles released, and the lineup changed: John White (Mëstar, Cloudboy) took over bass after David Glynn left for Auckland, with Tenzin Mullin (Lars Von Trio, Heka, Suka, The David Lynch Mob) joining when John returned to Nepal. Falling Through, recorded 2020 to 2022, reflects that development and acts as a monument to a band that is currently no longer active. The nine mesmerising songs that make up the album, steeped in folky warmth and tinged with misty psychedelia, are a salient statement from one of New Zealand’s most significant alternative rock artists.
Jay Clarkson’s latest offering Falling Through will be available from 21 March 2025.
