First Reserve returns with new single ‘telling the same joke twice’
With nothing but a handful of shows and one song to their name, First Reserve has amassed a devoted cult of fans in their home city of Te Whanganui-A-Tara. The last year has been a big one for the project’s founder, Ryan Connaghan. In between producing new music with Wet Denim’s Joe Ledword and setting up their hard and heavy First Reserve live group, they’ve also opened up for pop-punk heavyweights Hot Mulligan & Movements in their hometown.
First Reserve’s previous single, no one thinks we’re cool was all of the dance-pop-1975-naive-melody bliss fans were pining for. The new single, though, is all pop paint on a heavily emo canvas. telling he same joke twice makes for a cathartic step into that bittersweet no man’s land between country music and the wider emo realm.
