Emily Bateman Releases Atmospheric Pop Song ‘Most Wanted’
Tāmaki Makaurau’s Emily Bateman is developing her own musical world. Bursting with ethereal vocals and introspective lyricism, her music has been described as “Undeniably nostalgic” (Happy Magazine, 2023). Drawing inspiration from artists such as Lana Del Rey, Big Thief and Mazzy Star, Emily skilfully blends folk, pop and rock elements to craft dreamy ballads and indie-pop numbers.
In May of this year, she released her delicately beautiful 5- track EP, Like I Always Do, co-produced by celebrated engineer and drummer Tom Broome. Like I Always Do is a collection of songs centered around adolescence, love and nostalgia, and the stories we tell ourselves that ultimately keep us stagnant and self-involved. Having been selected for Big Fan’s songwriting week, ‘Fan Camp’, earlier this year, Emily emerged with a whole new set of songs, including new single Most Wanted.
Most Wanted is an atmospheric alternative pop song about desire and jealousy. It’s about being desperate for someone’s attention and feeling unworthy of it. With layered electric guitars and emotive vocals, this song takes the listener on a sonic journey, ending in a huge final chorus. Most Wanted comes out a week after Emily’s opening slot at Powerstation for artist Georgia Lines.
Currently deeply immersed in her next project, she is eagerly anticipating the release of new music this year. Her upcoming work will retain the dream pop essence that defines her sound while embracing a more direct, pop-oriented approach.
