Ellery Daines Announces New Album to be Released on 29 April

Ellery Daines is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer and mixing engineer from Nelson, New Zealand. In 2018 he moved to the Norwegian arctic city of Tromsø. He makes rock music with overtones of punk, jazz and pop, influenced by the likes of The Living End, Shihad, Muse and Queens of the Stone Age.

From 2016-2021, Ellery completed his debut album, Failure Thirty Minutes Deep. The album ranges from high-energy punk rock to slow almost-acoustic ballads, and deals with the idea of giving up on music. “When I was performing in New Zealand I had a lot of great experiences and worked with some amazing people, but it seemed like the general population didn’t care about local music – especially rock music. That really wore me down over time. When I decided to move to Tromsø, I knew I was leaving all my musical friends and networks behind, so I was facing the possibility of giving up on music altogether. The album is about dealing with that harsh cultural environment, and then the personal fallout of giving up and leaving it behind.”

As with his two previous EPs, Ellery wrote, performed, recorded and mixed all the songs himself. He recorded in his garage and at Kysten Studio in Tromsø. “Part of the reason it took 5 years to make 8 songs is that I did nearly everything myself. It definitely takes it out of you working that way! The other part was obviously moving to the other side of the world, adjusting to a new culture and lifestyle and language.”

Failure Thirty Minutes Deep is out April 29.
