Thanks to Sam for answering these questions:

What can we expect to see from Kitsch over the next year?

Completion of our next album and all that comes with releasing an album.

Who are your favourite NZ musicians/bands, and why?

Being repetitively exposed to the bands in the immediate local scene, often makes them my favourite’s by default.

What will Kitsch’s next release be?

Our fourth album.

How do you come up with your lyrics?

Good question. Almost always it’s whilst I’m playing guitar, experimenting, and as guitar parts develop a vocal melody often stumbles or mumbles out. Then my brain clutches at whatever is available. No matter how vague or broad there is usually something in there, whether it be imaginative, possibly TV or media based or something that had left emotional resonance within. I attempt to add a poetic touch or flare. And I usually settle on a basic melody and flesh out the rest later (sometimes in the final days/hours/minutes before recording it).

Who would you most like to support live?

Metallica. Not that we are suitable to open for them.

What can you never leave home without?

Keys.

How do you describe your music?

Rock music.

What is your favourite NZ venue?

There can never be just one so…

To perform at; The Powerstation or the old Hole in the Wall/Valve in Wellington. To attend a show; Brooklands Bowl in New Plymouth, or Western Springs Stadium.

What is the best part of being a musician?

Creating works of art and the camaraderie with peers.

What is in your CD collection at home?

I honestly don’t think I have one.

What is your most embarrassing on tour/gig moment?

It’s too graphic to divulge.

What is your favourite place in NZ to be?

On a rugged West Coast beach, I’m not fussy. Bethalls Beach in Auckland was amazing yesterday.

What inspired you to start Kitsch?

The other talented musicians needed a singer. I often wonder if they regret asking me.

About the interviewer Lisa Jones

I’m Lisa, Muzic.NZ’s founder and manager. I also manage the Aotearoa Music Industry Collective as well as the Aotearoa Rock Community and the Gig Space Facebook groups. I’ve been interested in music for as long as I can remember – I grew up listening to my parent’s records and watching the Top 40 Countdown on TV every weekend. I also played the drums and guitar in high school, and wrote lyrics for some of my friend’s bands. I come from a musical background; my Granddad was one of the main founders of country music clubs in Taranaki. Rock is my favourite genre of music, but I enjoy a huge variety of genres from old school hip-hop through to metal, punk, pop, folk and EDM. My advice to NZ musicians’ is to build yourself a great support network, never be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and talk to
