What is the best gig/event you have ever performed at, and why?

Two gigs that really stand out are opening for OpShop in our hometown and playing with Elemeno P (in front of 2500 drunken university students!). But nothing can match our EP release party we threw at the Blue Pub in Methven: Beer in the foldbacks, girls on stage. It was an amazing crazy night with 150 of our true blue fans turning up to rock the night into the small hours (and then some).

What is your favourite NZ venue?

It’s gotta be the Blue Pub in Methven. We get the craziest dancefloor action happening there: One time in a previous band we had one guitarist ripping a solo on top of the bar while our other axe jockey Gormo (our 10 foot tall lead guitarist at present) was perched on the cigarette vending machine. That show finished with a pile of broken guitars covered in 200 peoples sweat…oh the memories…….

We also played a great intimate set at the Dux de Lux in Queenstown a while ago, it was so intense and the crowd was locked on, it just rocked aye so I deffinately rate the Dux as a great venue.

What can we expect to see from Doppler over the next year?

We have so much material at the moment, and I know Adam has another 100 songs waiting to explode from his brain! We are hoping to rough out heaps more songs, get some alternative feedback, pick the best and record a couple of singles, or an EP (or if we find some cash lying round, splash out on an album, who knows!).

We are also doing a South Island promo tour in August for a new Kiwi music and extreme sports festival, with gigs in Dunedin, Queenstown, Timaru, Ashburton, Twizel, Wanaka and Christchurch. I’m sure you will hear a lot more about this in the coming months!

What other NZ musicians or bands would you like to see more of, and why?

I would have to say The Dukes; they are amazing musicians who have an amazing sound that needs to be heard by everyone.

I also really enjoy Christchurch band Sunburn, they are all great guys who have alot of potential chart topping pop/rock songs.

If you could, what rumour would you start about yourselves?

Well we could say something like:

"DOPPLER KNOWS WHERE OSAMA BIN LADEN IS HIDING"

And we would instantly be interogated by the FBI which would lead to massive publicity in the states and an interview on Letterman "INSTANT SUCCESS!!"

We may already be famous since I just said that! "big brother is watching!!"

About the interviewer Lisa Jones

I’m Lisa, Muzic.NZ’s founder and manager. I also manage the Aotearoa Music Industry Collective as well as the Aotearoa Rock Community and the Gig Space Facebook groups. I’ve been interested in music for as long as I can remember – I grew up listening to my parent’s records and watching the Top 40 Countdown on TV every weekend. I also played the drums and guitar in high school, and wrote lyrics for some of my friend’s bands. I come from a musical background; my Granddad was one of the main founders of country music clubs in Taranaki. Rock is my favourite genre of music, but I enjoy a huge variety of genres from old school hip-hop through to metal, punk, pop, folk and EDM. My advice to NZ musicians’ is to build yourself a great support network, never be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and talk to
