Thanks to Jade for answering these questions:

What can we expect to see from you over the next year?

We want to record a new album some time this year – which we’re holding out to do pretty badly of course! We’re also cramming in as many live shows as possible and growing our sound.

What will your next release be?

We’re trying to release a video for ‘Leaving’ but our next major release will be our debut album ‘Coast’ on May 3rd. Then hopefully another album will follow it a little later on this year or early next year.

How do you describe your music?

An eclectic mix of genres -dub funk psychedelic rock.

Who are your favourite NZ musicians/bands, and why?

Kora, because of their solid musicianship and they’re just so energetic and strong when they perform. Shapeshifter, The Checks, Silk and Tiki Taane. We love Fat Freddy’s Drop – they have so much soul. The Black Seeds, Salmonella Dub and we’re digging Six60 at the mo. I love watching quality musicianship, there’s always something new you can learn.

How do you come up with your lyrics?

For me lyrics are usually not that hard to come up with. I write about things that I’m really passionate about, things that affect people emotionally and physically.

What can you never leave home without?

My Dictaphone, I record riffs and lyrics and melodies wherever I go.

What is the best part of being a musician?

Creating Art for the Ears and expressing it. Love it.

What is in your CD collection at home?

I have lots (as you would expect) but I always go back to my favourites, which are Red Hot Chili Peppers, Shapeshifter, Sublime, Rage, Jack Johnson, Kora and I’m liking Six60 at the mo.

What is your most embarrassing on tour/gig moment?

Turning up to the Auckland ‘Rock To The Top’ Competition 2009 (which we won in the end) but in the semi finals I turned up on stage and had forgotten my power leads to my pedals! Needless to say, I nearly died. Fortunately the guys before us had a spare one, which powered my board – we played and got through to the finals. Phew!

What is your favourite place in NZ to be?

Home with my family.

What inspired you to become a musician?

I’ve always been one – I was singing at 3 and taught myself to play the guitar at 7. It was always gonna happen!

What is the best gig you have ever performed at, and why?

Probably the Auckland ‘Rock to the Top’ Finals. We were up against some good bands but our trio won out. When it’s on the line we don’t hold anything back. Each gigs gotta be better than the last.

About the interviewer Lisa Jones

I’m Lisa, Muzic.NZ’s founder and manager. I also manage the Aotearoa Music Industry Collective as well as the Aotearoa Rock Community and the Gig Space Facebook groups. I’ve been interested in music for as long as I can remember – I grew up listening to my parent’s records and watching the Top 40 Countdown on TV every weekend. I also played the drums and guitar in high school, and wrote lyrics for some of my friend’s bands. I come from a musical background; my Granddad was one of the main founders of country music clubs in Taranaki. Rock is my favourite genre of music, but I enjoy a huge variety of genres from old school hip-hop through to metal, punk, pop, folk and EDM. My advice to NZ musicians’ is to build yourself a great support network, never be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and talk to
