Vocoder are a four-headed indie/pop/punk/rock/country monster from Wellington, New Zealand.
Vocoder have been together for over three years, initially gaining notoriety in the Wellington, New Zealand scene for their energetic, scissor-kicking, instrument-trashing live style.
They have rapidly evolved into a tight three-piece with a sound that has been variously described as “surf-inspired alt rock with huge lashings of eighties new-wave pop”, “post-punk” and “wall-of-sound pop”.
Vocoder’s debut EP ‘Sweethearts Of The Radio’ came out in 2002 and features ‘The Turnaround’ which was also released as a radio single from the Australian compilation ‘Planet of the Popboomerang’.
“Fizzing like the Buzzcocks on a caffeine high, Vocoder have energy and scissor-kicks to burn and their introductory six-song EP is a gem.” Real Groove Magazine, January/February 2003
