Filipino-born, Mark Bulos is a guitarist, singer/songwriter, and producer from Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland. His music is rooted in city pop and Asian pop aesthetics with a breezy, nostalgic atmosphere. A graduate of Auckland Jazz School, he stepped beyond the traditional session route to shape his own sonic identity—one that merges jazz-trained finesse with a warm, shimmery sound.
A passionate crate-digger and vinyl collector, Mark draws deep inspiration from the warm, analog sounds of the past. Influenced by artists such as Tatsuro Yamashita, Sade, Anita Baker and Prince, his music is rich in melody, atmosphere, and rhythmic sophistication. As a dedicated bedroom producer, he explores new sonic textures and subtle harmonic layers, seamlessly blending classic and contemporary influences. His style features sophisticated harmonies and grooves with poppy earworms, combined with high-pitched sweet vocals.
Mark plays with Elisa and Midnight Green and has performed at 95bFM Fancy New Band and Drive Island. His own band features some of Auckland’s most accomplished musicians, including Crystal Choi (Phoebe Rings, Bic Runga, Princess Chelsea), Michael Nash (Fourtune Quartet), Nat Hathaway (Masaya, Summer Thieves), Dan Waterson (The Waterways, Kossisko), and Adrian Brown (Keshia).
Mark Bulos’ self-produced debut album Fake Nostalgia blends shimmering city pop/funk and dream-pop influences, evoking a musical déjà vu — longing for a past never experienced. With bright, sparkly production contrasting bittersweet themes of longing, identity loss and escapism, the album’s visuals, inspired by Wong Kar Wai films, use handheld footage and night-driving aesthetics to capture its nostalgic essence.
