It’s the return of the Jumpygeusse and once again JCK has shown his artistic ability and individuality, not just as a rapper, but as a music and music video producer.
Cogs ‘n’ Wheels is the second track from, Muzic.net.nz reviewer and New Zealand Hip-Hop sensation, JCK’s upcoming Land of the Wrong White Crowd LP that I’ve had the privilege of reviewing, and if the rest of the album lives up to these two tracks, it’s going to be amazing.
Where Tipee Tipee Taa Taa was at its heart a critique of JCK’s experience as a black sheep in his chosen genre, Cogs ‘n’ Wheels is more of a whimsical expression of JCK’s lyrical abilities. A lyrical exploration of time and space through a pair of steam-punk goggles.
While it lacks the vocal hook of the previous single, the harmonica lead sticks in your head for hours, if not days afterwards.
JCK is carving out his niche in the New Zealand Hip-Hop scene, combining the theatrics of 90’s heroes of angst, Manson, ICP, Rob Zombie and the like, with the Rap/Hip-Hop scene that dominated the decade afterwards. Some musical purists may be critical of such a pairing, but this mash up of what we see as different worlds is an illustration of the melting pot of cultures this country represents.
JCK’s Land of the Wrong White Crowd is available from iTunes with an expected release on June 12th. You can find the Cogs ‘n’ Wheels video on JCK’s YouTube page.
