Build It Album Review

Wellington’s Brockaflower (or Brockaflowersaurus-Rex and the Blueberry Biscuits to use their full name) have been getting a bit of hype around town lately, as they develop a reputation for a fun-filled live show (although I’m yet to see them live myself). So I was interested to hear what their debut album, Build It, would sound like.

For a nine-piece band, the music is surprisingly light and spacey; rather than everyone vying for attention on the album, these polished musicians know when to hold back and went to have their time to shine.

They do the neo-soul/funk thing well, with most of the songs finding a nice groove and just simmering away. And that would be my only complaint with the album; after the funk, and fun, filled opener Meyer, the energy seems to get dialled down a bit and the songs become slow-burners. 

That’s not to say they’re not nice songs, and they’re all easy to listen to, but it would have been nice to see the energy maintained. It does pick up again around the middle of the album, and the excellent Yams showcases just how much energy the band has.

As a debut, Build It does a fine job of introducing the band’s sound, and I’m definitely looking forward to seeing where those psychedelic Blueberry Biscuits take them on their next album.
