Enthusiastically honest lyrics and a homely, familiar flavour are the initial hits when yourToaster EP pops. Mishap hauls in the spirits of Green Day (Dookie Days) and I’m going to say a smearing of Smash-era Offspring to bring you their musical offering. Singing about truly moving topics, like stealing from graveyards and scrumpy, Mishap has created an EP that is both raw and catchy.

The Scrumpy Song is a woeful tale of a group of teens who thought they were cool, but had to watch their lives derail because they were fucking dumb. The story couldn’t be any sadder unfortunately, so bring tissues. Seeing too much sadness hath congealed your blood, as Shakespeare might allude.

Gang vocals and a prominent bassline in I Have a Disease help paint this song as a standout.

One thing I really enjoyed about this EP is that it is lyrically narrative, making it simple and almost naïve, there are no cryptic meanings to decode in this album.  It’s almost like someone is just telling you a story and I like that.

As the EP progresses, the New Zealandness leaks out a lot more. With a tone reminiscent of many 90s/2000s NZ alt bands live, the Toaster EP manages to pull at my heartstrings just a little. I think they’d put on a fun live performance for sure.

Toaster EP is a fun, peppy, punky, pop sprinkled collection of songs. You can listen and have a bounce and hear a few influences woven together with a uniquely NZ sound, so give it a go.
