Single Review: Kids Like Me 1

Auckland based indie/folk singer songwriter Isla has just released a catchy new single, Kids Like Me. She is the new “kid” on the block adding a fresh funky twist to the NZ indie pop/folk scene.

Kids Like Me is an upbeat track with an electric pop/folk sound, thanks to the harmonic additions of flute, Cajon and some slick fast paced viola. Strong melodious vocals and smooth guitar playing make this a snappy original track.

Often offbeat and unconventional her songs are written mostly for ukulele. Isla lists her biggest influences as Dodie, Flight Of The Conchords, Kermit The Frog and her Dad. She does not like her music to be referred to as “cute” which is fair enough, I would go beyond that and suggests that it is engaging, fun and vibrant.

In my opinion, Kids Like Me is a bright and lively track with a youthful energetic twist on the more traditional folk music. A talented vocalist and songwriter, Isla offers interesting lyrics and refreshing composition.

This single is a taste of what is to come on her new EP Weirdo, which is about to be released. I have a feeling it will be well worth the wait for this one.
