Single Review: Dark Horse 1

This new single from The Wake Up is a solid pop rock/pop punk track with a fantastic chorus.

From the moment Dark Horse starts, you can tell you are about to have a rocking good time and I certainly wasn’t disappointed. The Wake Up stay true to their Kiwi nature, which is something I absolutely love about New Zealand music. While influenced by many a band both overseas and in Aotearoa, it’s still brilliant to hear that Kiwi sound coming through.

With a story that goes into why you shouldn’t let things get you down, whether that is relationships or paying rent etc, this track makes for compelling listening. The chorus brings a truly feel good vibe to the song, making a real change from the feel of the verses. It’s something that works well, and it also means that we get to hear a great and powerful pay off in the bridge.

Throughout the track, the vocals fit so well and sit balanced amongst the raucous guitars and awesome synth lines along with the tight drums and bass. Sonically, it is a lovely sounding track and it ebbs and flows, breathing with dynamics in order to make the sections I mentioned above come to life.

Absolutely, this song is a banger. The chorus is certainly something I could see a crowd getting into and singing along.
