Single Review: Raelene 1

Auckland-based indie band Tricks & Sleeves have recently released their latest single Raelene. These lads have drawn various inspiration from other alternative/indie bands of the last couple of decades, as well inspiration from 70’s folk artists like Paul Simon and Neil Young. You hear hints of Jimmy Eat World’s Jim Adkins in the vocals, a vibe of Beach Fossils, and the compelling folk sound of Fleet Foxes. They released their self-titled debut album in 2014 and have continued to release great music since. The band is characterised by their “catchy vocal melodies on top of solid rhythms [which] form the basis of [their] sound.” They’re also known for some mystifying guitar solos, with some exceptionally good lyricism.

Raelene starts off with a sorrowful acoustic and vocal melody, with some great keys. A more upbeat tempo kicks off at 1 minute, where the song becomes a real catch. The lyrics are raw and relatable; we all need a bit of sadness to soak up some reality. The wonder about this single is, even though the lyrics depict melancholy or frustration; it’s not a low-spirited song. The energy is high and does well at bringing us together. Not many of us are in high-swinging moods in our current global state; this song really helps depict this reality and brings us down to earth. Many of us have been retreating and can equally feel the want to deflate or “scream it out”. On top of great lyrics, the drums are a fun touch; giving us a folky rumble until a majestic guitar solo rolls in at 2 minutes 18 seconds. The texture of the electric guitar really helps build and express the song, until it’s bold, vocally layered finish.

It’s a tune for our time, yet, with a beautifully nostalgic hint of the early 2000’s; it brings us forward and takes us back. The song is out now on all major streaming; with an alluring, carefree music video available to watch here.

About the author Gaby Ivanov-Giraldo

If I could come up with enough reasons to do music I’d be here all day. ‘Cause theres heaps. And… that’s why I’m here. A seemingly dead beat industry. Here to tell you it’s not! Anyway… I’ve been with MNZ five years. I love writing and do a bit of fun stuff on the side. I run. Love animals. People. Beer. Shhh. Haha! And I love to help others read about and understand the great local talents and bands we have here that should thrive! Because, why not?…
