Gig Review: Devilskin with Shepherds Reign @ San Fran, Wellington – 08/10/2020
Even during a period of uncertainty in New Zealand with Covid-19, Devilskin and support act Shepherds Reign managed to fill San Francisco Bath House in Wellington. In fact, I have not seen a queue outside on the street for quite some time. I was at the bar (of course) when the deep bass rumbled across the floor, shaking the entire room announcing Shepherds Reign had taken to the stage. Wearing traditional Samoan ulafala and playing a mixture of classic heavy metal instruments and native Samoan instruments, the guys had an awesome stage presence, and the crowd were really getting into their songs.
The energy and power of Shepherds Reign was right up there with the some of the best heavy metal bands I have seen. Filivaa‘s
(lead vocals) hair has got to be mentioned. At times you cannot even see his face, his hair is huge!!!! The highlight for many though was the cover of Savage’s Swing. That was epic and I recommended you look out for these guys. If you
like what Alien Weaponry have done, you will not go far wrong with Shepherds Reign.
Next up was Devilskin. I have seen these guys a few times, the last time was in Wellington at the Hunter Lounge and before that at TSB Arena. I wasn’t sure how
their show would go in a small venue like San Fran – there wasn’t the usual build-up of a big show but more of a direct engagement with the close crowd. They didn’t disappoint. Among the BO, beer smells and feet sticking to the floor, the atmosphere
was buzzing and moshing ensued.
A mixture of old and new songs showed how far Devilskin have come, with slow ballads through to up-beat, in your face, dirty rock. Nail, Paul and Nic were in perfect harmony while letting Jennie rip into the vocals. Poetic and beautiful one minute, and then the Devil comes out and reaches into your soul.
An amazing night and I will sure to be at the next one. I highly recommended this for anyone, it’s a great performance that you will enjoy, regardless of your musical tastes.
