Album Review: Ida Lune 1

In 2013 Deanne Krieg (WHIM, Dawn Diver), Rose Blake (Blaek, Dawn Diver) and Anna Wooles formed Poneke/Wellington avant-folk trio Ida Lune, forming a strong bond over their shared love of harmony. The trio have released their self-titled debut album which promises to be a lush blend of three part harmonies, yet each bringing to the fore their own unique style of vocals.

The ten track album is a warm full bodied compilation of beautiful harmonies, multiple layers of synths and various strings comprising of banjo, mandolin, guitar to name a few. Adding to the depth of layers is bass by Scott Maynard and percussion by Ato Baidoo. Even the recording of Ida Lune is special, taking place in singer Anna Wooles old family home.

The opening track The Well has a clear Celtic folk sound, and instantly gives the listener a taste of their stunning harmonic clearly layered melodies.

As you weave your way through this album, what becomes apparent is the lyrics are a blend of well written story telling infused with humour, as is the case with Lazy Liar and Jeremy. A mixture of sweet and strong.

Other tracks such as Apart and River Song are haunting and evocative. There is no denying the potent mix of the trio’s vocals. A clear rhythmical interlacing of rich and golden tones married with astute lyrics.

Another stand out aspect of Apart, is the engaging musical video which accompanies the track. The breath-taking beauty of Wellington’s Red Rocks captured in slow motion suits the song perfectly.

Cohesive blending of tones and vocals come together one last time on the final track, a haunting piece of music called No Harm In Hope. Bringing to a close ten tracks of spectacular music.
