From the library of mysterious Kaitaia artist EM/FM, Close Enough is a synth-filled slow jam, introduced by its bright retro wave artwork which visually represents the track’s creative blend of machine-generated instrumentation with traditional jazz.
Close Enough offers a unique song structure, with its groovy chorus not hitting until just before the two minute mark, and a lengthy final chorus section. This bold move makes the track initially hard to follow. However, after the first few listens, Close Enough gains enough familiarity to allow listeners to fully get lost in the music. Heavenly synths and subtle beats create movement, whilst building a seriously emotional atmosphere, very reminiscent of 90s adult contemporary. In particular, EM/FM’s stunning vocals emphasise his raw emotion, with a breath-taking bridge and ad-libs in the song’s latter half, backed by a chorus of angelic backing vocals. The track’s production is sparse, but highly sentimental, just stripped back enough to convey the precise feeling EM/FM desires.
EM/FM has a clear passion for music, and it shines through on Close Enough. Audiences looking for an easy yet emotional listen from an inventive Kiwi creator should continue watching EM/FM with baited breath.
