Single Review: Rain 1

Samuel Gaskin is a New Zealand born, Melbourne dwelling artist; he has just released his latest single Rain. Sam is an inspiring and innovative artist that stands up for the BIPOC LGBTQIA+ community; addressing his Indigenous heritage and ancestry in each art piece he produces. Along with a gift in performing arts and acting, Sam is an avid creative with a fire for modern exposure of his people, his posse and his practice. He makes captivating and melodic music, with powerful vocals and speaks to both modern and traditional audiences, bringing important artistic styles to the forefront of popular music.

As Rolling Stone said themselves about his song Reckoning; “[it] is one that delights every one of the senses for those lucky enough to witness it.” This is true of Rain. It’s a sensory experience and deserves all the credit it will receive.

Rain starts off with strong rhythmic drumming, referencing the elements of water and fire. The track is followed by robust and captivating vocals. It has a very powerful vocal exchange between artists, featuring The Merindas. This track is definitive, culturally spiritual and has uplifting lyricism. You hear both Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander and Maori voices, singing in harmony, and creating waves of enchantment.

Electronic meets home-grown, intertwined with pop and a heavy bassline that really sticks! It’s a fast moving, bold tune that encapsulates the bravery of the Indigenous community and its safeguards. Featuring natural elements, his song bounces with energy and ingenuity. The vibe is happy, and celebratory of the natural world. I thoroughly enjoy the aural travel through heritage, and the representation through visual and performing arts.

Rain is produced by Aria Award winning collaborator and friend Pip Norman; a true fusion of sound, linguistics and wisdom.

About the author Gaby Ivanov-Giraldo

If I could come up with enough reasons to do music I’d be here all day. ‘Cause theres heaps. And… that’s why I’m here. A seemingly dead beat industry. Here to tell you it’s not! Anyway… I’ve been with MNZ five years. I love writing and do a bit of fun stuff on the side. I run. Love animals. People. Beer. Shhh. Haha! And I love to help others read about and understand the great local talents and bands we have here that should thrive! Because, why not?…
