Single Review: Ms Mona Lisa 1

Born in Wellington, and raised in Nelson, Reece Milton is a singer songwriter and guitarist who’s recently earned a recording contract with Antipodes Records, and management with StudioBox Creative. Finding licks that match indie rock influence, pop and a bit of jazz, Reece has created a new single which follows the success of his debut. His tracks are guitar driven, versatile and easy grooves to listen to. Reece’s debut Once in a Lifetime was recorded at StudioBox and produced by Greg Haver (Manic Street Preachers and Melanie C).

I mean honestly, if you’ve released your fourth single in three years with acclaim; you’re doing alright! Being able to produce, and stay relevant simultaneously is definitely ambitious. Reece is coming up with new content as we speak, and this week’s release Ms Mona Lisa is what he’s got for us.

Ms Mona Lisa is the newest single coming off his album Elixir. This song’s theme celebrates the weirdly satisfying escape from love pains and heartbreak. When you’ve been lonely, finding someone adventurous is a thrill worth going wild for. Yet, the absence of pain can be as bittersweet as falling in the first place. Mona Lisa is a character that’s probably more notorious than anything; she’s got the power to hurt you. So… what do musicians do!? Write a song about it!

Reece’s vocals and lyricism have a seductive grasp on his audience within moments. The hook’s built to capture you, and perhaps entice a familiar feeling. Ah, popular music right!? The airy tone felt through his vocals are a fond feature, blending well with the watery guitar notes that opened the track.

You can’t isolate the style of Reece’s voice from the band anymore, he’s created familiarity which is hugely important for a young artist. Influenced by John Mayer, James Bay and artists like Ruel. He creates lyrics of being pushed to the edge and finally finding peace which no doubt resonates with many. Reece is planning to tour Australia and New Zealand in 2022 and 2023 with fellow Antipodes Records artist Nathan Foley. Ms Mona Lisa offers us fresh content right before a new chapter!

About the author Gaby Ivanov-Giraldo

If I could come up with enough reasons to do music I’d be here all day. ‘Cause theres heaps. And… that’s why I’m here. A seemingly dead beat industry. Here to tell you it’s not! Anyway… I’ve been with MNZ five years. I love writing and do a bit of fun stuff on the side. I run. Love animals. People. Beer. Shhh. Haha! And I love to help others read about and understand the great local talents and bands we have here that should thrive! Because, why not?…
