Gig Review: Luke Buda @ Space Academy, Christchurch 13/04/2024 1

Christchurch locals were treated to a great evening of outstanding music, played by some great musicians including The Phoenix Foundation founding member Luke Buda, at Space Academy on Saturday night. Space Academy is known for being a small intimate bar, which set the tone perfectly for the night and music ahead.

Luke is currently on a nationwide tour ahead of his new single release, Very Special Feelings.

To start the night our ears were treated to local solo artist Hannah Everingham. Her fantastic guitar work mixed with her lovely voice, delivery and final product were all perfectly in tune, captivating the audience and brought everyone to the floor to experience the performances that were taking place.

Her wit and skill in plucking guitar strings made her performance enjoyable, memorable and inspiring. Hannah played a great set, easily demonstrating her music ability and song writing. She’s definitely someone to watch out for.

Following Hannah’s fantastic performance, was Luke Buda, a musician well-known in both New Zealand and abroad.

Talking briefly with Luke before the show, he demonstrated how humble and friendly he is.
The show Luke and his band performed was exactly what I’d hoped for, and more, the sound and lighting was so on point, making for a very enjoyable night.

After spending time during the week listening to Luke’s previously released music, I was aware of what to expect, and I was amazed by the level of musicianship and sound quality that Luke and his band produced on the night, replicating what I’d heard in his previous albums. I was delighted to see the mix in ages and people from all walks of life who came along to support these amazing artists, and it didn’t take long for the floor to fill up with an eager audience.

As a person new to this genre of music, I was very impressed. The music performance, although different to my usual style, was fantastic and faultless, and very memorable. Luke, his band, and Hannah all made a very enjoyable night , and I’m now listening to more of their music. I thoroughly recommend heading along and seeing Luke Buda and his band perform live.

Luke continues his tour with Wellington, and Auckland taking place next weekend, joining him, is Auckland act Phoebe Rings, fresh from recording their album. Be sure to head along and support some great musicians, and reward your ears with great music - it’s a great experience!
