Valentine’s Heartbreak, Or Self Love?

While to some, a Valentine’s Day release for a grungy ode to solitude may seem like an odd choice — it was a no-brainer for alt-rap supergroup Otherwoman. Their debut single Existential Crisis aims to offer reprieve for those who can’t help but grit their teeth at the sight of love hearts and teddy bears, and provides a refreshing reminder to focus on yourself for even the most devoted lovebirds.

Existential Crisis is our first look at Otherwoman’s unique spin on rap as a genre. The dark, melodic track, which dances back and forth between musical stylings akin to Earl Sweatshirt and Nirvana showcases unexpectedly optimistic messaging interwoven throughout the melancholic instrumentation and lyricism, as the chorus reminds listeners to revel in time alone, and look to themselves for the much needed validation we so often seek from others.

Otherwoman’s official debut has been a long time in the making, and fans of day13n, TAMiii, and Taimana’s past work are already all too familiar with the track. Having heard it live at shows such as JMSN’s tour, and Artists for Palestine with CHAII, Existential Crisis was already garnering massive audience response, significant hype, and calls for release on social media long before any official announcement.

The track will be accompanied by an extensive social media rollout, including an unconventional music video shot and edited by the band themselves. Additionally, its release will see the group embark on a unique tour, featuring live performances at Auckland beaches throughout the month of March, and kick off a massive first year for Otherwoman, with 3 more singles, an album, a multitude of live shows, exclusive physical releases, and a country-wide tour scheduled to follow.

Existential Crisis is a wholly unique, and outstanding first entry by a band you’ll want to keep on your radar.
