Auckland-based Indie-pop artist Emily Bateman returns with her emotionally charged new single What A Dream, blending grungy alternative rock elements with her signature ethereal sound. The track is a candid reflection on the complicated emotions that follow a chaotic relationship.

Following her recent successes, including her opening slot for Georgia Lines at Auckland’s Powerstation and securing a spot at Big Fan’s songwriting camp, Emily is establishing herself as one of New Zealand’s most exciting emerging artists.

Co-written by Emily, Kahu Sanson-Burnett and Keegan Wairua Tunks, What A Dream explores the emotional aftermath of a toxic relationship that still lingers in the mind. Bateman sings, “And now the fever dream begins,” evoking a sense of nostalgia for a time that, while chaotic and damaging, is hard to let go of.

Emily shares, “This song is about getting caught up in nostalgia and knowing that, while a relationship wasn’t great, you still feel a kind of homesickness and longing for it again. It’s about craving stability after a period of chaos, yet still yearning for the highs.”
