Anglebox

In early 2023, in Christchurch New Zealand, a new band was quietly beginning to take shape. Ian Cartwright, known for his work with The Late Starters, was searching for a fresh collaboration to breathe life into his original songs. Over a cup of coffee, he shared his vision with Richard Grist, a fellow musician whose band, Blackholestars, had previously shared the stage with The Late Starters. Their conversation sparked the beginning of what would become Anglebox.

They were soon joined by David ‘Stacky’ Stack on vocals, Greg Mannering on bass, and Dave Deakins on drums, completing the lineup. Each member brought their own unique influence and style, creating a melting pot of musical ideas and talents.

By early 2024, Ian’s rough demos had become the backbone of their sound. Richard worked his magic, transforming acoustic sketches into robust arrangements that set the stage for Greg’s brilliant bass lines. Their initial practice sessions in July 2024 were nothing short of incredible; the band played with an energy that was palpable, driven by Dave’s dynamic drumming and Stacky’s powerful vocals.

Eager to capture the raw intensity of these sessions, Anglebox headed to audio-Centric Studios in Christchurch. Under the meticulous eye of producer Ian McAllister, they started to record the tracks for their debut EP Dark Days In The Sun. Over the following months, they layered guitars and vocals, diligently crafting each song. McAllister’s passion and guidance helped to shape the final product, ensuring that every track resonated with the band’s intended energy and emotion.

Anglebox’s debut single, Undies on the Lawn captures the essence of Anglebox: a blend of Kiwi rock with infectious pop and punk elements, influenced by the music of their generation — The Mutton Birds, The Exponents, and The Clash.

The band is also gearing up for the release of their debut EP, Dark Days in the Sun, which will feature a diverse range of tracks. They are also continuing to work on new material and plan to perform live shows later in 2025.
