Proteins Of Magic Release 'one More Thing', And Announce Album Release And Tour Dates

New Zealand native, and multi-format artist Kelly Sherrod, who performs under the moniker Proteins of Magic, is set to release her self-titled debut album August 13. The first track revealed from the collection is One More Thing. The video, which is a unique and mesmerising claymation, was created by Kelly herself.

At the beginning of the pandemic, being in a self-imposed lockdown triggered an intense yearning for loved ones both overseas and close by. Kelly wrote One More Thing during this time, she explains — “I remember wondering if it would be at least a year before I was able to get back to New Zealand. Feeling at times trapped during lockdown for what ended up being 6 months, ultimately, I decided with my husband, that it was best for me to travel back to New Zealand with our 5 year old son, there I could focus on my album and Marlo could attend school”

Kelly explains “what I’m trying to convey is we all need more time, as people we all need another chance, the morphing clay characters are asking for empathy, especially during the pandemic, everyone is taking sides, but it can be an opportunity to understand each other, especially in America where I’ve been living, it is so divided right now.”

From a recent live show with Jakob, Ambient Light describes her one-woman performance, “Rhythmic breaths and gasps cut our chat short, and we head inside as Proteins of Magic (aka Kelly Sherrod) layers the first track of the evening. Wearing an all-white, tight latex top, she stood alone with her keyboard amidst an ever-growing wall of sound. Deep, sampled drum hits stumble around her bellowing siren song, cutting in and out on command with complete fluency. Impressions bring to mind Grimes with hints from the darker undertones of Tricky.”

Splitting time between NZ and Nashville, Tennessee, Kelly most recently played bass and toured across Europe and America with Grammy and Academy Award winner Ryan Bingham. She also released three individual art gallery collections on canvas in recent years. Winning “most promising female musician award” at the NZ Rockquest in high school, Kelly went on to study at Elam art school before making her debut into the NZ music scene fronting Punches with James Duncan (2003-09) and playing bass with Dimmer’s Shayne Carter (2007-09), which also included touring America with The Brian Jonestown Massacre. It was in 2009 when Kelly moved to Nashville, devoting herself to painting, recording in her home studio and touring. Soon after her son’s birth and the experiences that followed, Kelly found her personal drive and artistic ammunition to express her stories with music and visual art.

The upcoming music collection which debuts with the release of One More Thing from her forthcoming self-titled album out August 13. Proteins of Magic is currently touring across New Zealand.
